It is mainly an important archaeological site in Jordan; also, the capital of the ancient Nabataean kingdom. Its name is appropriate, as it is of Latin origin; from the feminine of “Peter”, a name that means “stone”.

The City of Petra is famous for its architecture, it is not a city built with stones, it is a city excavated and sculpted in the stone, literally; in addition, it contains an advanced system of water conduits.

For this reason, it is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the country, which is one of the reasons why Petra was chosen since 2007, to be part of the wonders of the modern world.

Taj Mahal – India

Apart from being among the wonders of the world, it was also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. By many it is considered a palace, which was originally a mausoleum; built by the Muslim emperor Shah Jahan in honor of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, after she died in childbirth of one of his sons.

The main tomb is the centerpiece of a 42-acre complex; which includes a mosque, a guest house and the gardens it contains. It is located in the city of Agra, in the Uttar Pradesh state of India.

Machu Picchu – Peru.

Dating back to the 15th century, this is the Inca city of Machu Picchu in the Cusco region of Peru. It is located on the crest of a mountain, 2,430 meters above sea level. There are several peripheral buildings that have been recently reconstructed to give a better idea of what the original city was like and to make it as similar as possible.

During the Inca period, it was an important urban and religious center. It is composed of fine polished stone constructions where beautiful temples stand out; such as the temple of the sun Inti Watana, the Temple of the Moon, the Hall of the Three Windows and more. For Peru it is the symbol of strength, the creativity of a people and the enduring.

The Colosseum of Rome – Italy

Undoubtedly, the Roman Colosseum is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world; it is located in Rome, Capital of Italy. This amphitheater is one of the most famous and recognizable constructions in the world; currently, it is one of the most representative of the era of the Roman Empire and dates back to the 1st century.

It was intended for spectators to watch public performances, such as mock naval battles, dramas based on classical mythology and gladiatorial contests. Its seating capacity was between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.


The Great Wall – China

The Great Wall consists of a series of fortifications of stone, brick, wood and rammed earth. This impressive wall runs along the historic borders of northern China and was built between the 5th century BC and the 16th century AD; it served as protection for the Chinese empire, as the country’s northern border was frequently attacked by nomads from Mongolia and Manchuria.

It is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world, as it is a symbol of power and unification of China in the Qin dynasty; therefore, it is an important representation of their impressive ability to work together for the country.

Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro – Brazil

Although it is in the last place, it is not the least important; Christ the Redeemer is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world and it is located in Brazil. It is a statue of approximately 30 meters high, which crowns the Corcovado mountain and represents the body of Jesus of Nazareth.

This work was inaugurated in 1931 and was the result of the work of the hands of the sculptor Paul Landowski, a Polish-French, and Heitor da Silva Costa, a Brazilian engineer; who had the collaboration of the French Albert Caquot and Gheorge Leonida, a Romanian artist who was responsible for the face of Christ in this sculpture.

It is the third largest sculpture of Christ in the world and one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country; it has become a place of pilgrimage for the Catholic faithful from all over the world. It was included in the list of the 7 wonders of the modern world due to its social, cultural and religious importance.
